6. Valier Arland Jones, son of Reese Leon Jones and Olivia "Libby" Mikesell Lewis was born on 9 Nov 1912 in Valier, Pondera, Montana. When Valier was five years old his parents moved to Montigue, California where his father was able to acquire a ranch of about 80 acres near the Shasta River. The entire family, Valier's parents, himself and his two brothers and sister all lived in a one room shack on the ranch. Valier's father farmed hay and alfalfa and had a vegetable garden. He also raised hogs and cattle for milk and slaughter. They had bee hives from which they harvested alfalfa honey. They also had a plough horse and the kids had their own horses as well. After a couple of years Valier's father was also able to rent an adjoining ranch of another 80 acres with a much bigger house and barn. They then had about 16 milk cows and raised corn and wheat.

When Valier was a boy he went fishing with his older brother Leon, and a friend of his brother's, in the Shasta River. Leon and his friend both drowned and Valier had to run home to get help. After the drowning Valier's parents sold the ranch and moved into Montigue, and then later to Grenada, California where Valier's dad worked in a box factory. Not too long later the Jones family moved to Bray, California where Valier and his brother Marvin had an idylic life, there hunting and fishing and hanging out at the swimming hole. The boys only intermittedly went school at the one room schoolhouse there. After a few years Valier's parents seperated and Valier and his brother Marvin ended up in a campground in Gridley, California with their father. He got a job in Paradise, California and left the two boys to fend for themselves in Gridley. Valier's father married Myrtle Phillips and spent most of his time with her. When Valier was about 15 or 16 he got in a big fight with his dad and moved to Oakland and worked in a Salami factory.
